Drum

You may think this is an obvious one, but to be honest, this term has a wide description. The technical description is: a musical percussion instrument consisting of a hollow, usually cylindrical, body covered at one or both ends with a tightly stretched membrane, or head, which is struck with the hand, a stick, or a pair of sticks, and typically produces a booming, tapping, or hollow sound. This tells us that pretty much any hollowed object with a covered end that makes a sound is classified as a drum. But let’s move past this, and focus more on a “drummers drum”.

On a drum kit, a drum is usually made from wood (oak, maple, birch, beech, bamboo), unless you are talking about a snare. In this case it can be made from wood, brass, steel, or other metal alloys. Usually, drums have heads on ends, a resonant head and a batter head. The body of a wood drum is made of many different ply’s of wood, ranging from 4-ply all the way to 20-ply. The tone the drum makes is based on two things, the size and the depth of the drum - the smaller the drum, the higher the sound, the bigger the drum, the lower the sound. This is why the bass drum is always the biggest drum!
